Perry was born July 25, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback), her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. Fearing stress, her parents were not keen to let the actress pursue acting until she reached the age of 18. Perry confessed that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school, but started performing as a means to connect with new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she landed small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness led Perry back to California and theater roles were readily available. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. In the year 2015, she was with Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie. It is part of the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. Perry was also featured in an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. The same year she was cast as a young version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen model of the mother's. The role was selected through an audition, even though she had a close relationship with the show.
